teashirt was initially identified as a gene required for the specification of the trunk segments
in Drosophila embryogenesis and encodes a transcription factor with zinc finger motifs. We
report here that targeted expression of teashirt in imaginal discs is sufficient to induce
ectopic eye formation in non-eye tissues, a phenotype similar to that produced from targeted
expression of eyeless, dachshund, and eyes absent. Furthermore, teashirt and eyeless

Furthermore, teashirt and eyeless induce the expression of each other, suggesting that teashirt is part of the gene network that functions to specify eye identity.
